The biological meaning of adult is a term used to describe an animal that is capable of reproducing. In the context of humans, the term adult has meanings associated with moral and social concepts. As opposed to a "non-adult" or "minor" legally adult has attained the age of majority. They are considered independent, self-sufficient, and accountable. The word "major" may be used to define the person. The age for achieving legal adulthood is 18, although definition may vary by laws, countries and the level of development in psychological terms.

At the point that a person reaches physical and intellectual maturity, it is referred to as adulthood. Adulthood, as it is commonly understood, starts around the age of around 20 or 21. The middle age stage, which begins around 40 years old and is followed by the onset of old age at about 60 years. There are three main levels of adulthood: the early years of adulthood (18 to mid-30s), middle adulthood (mid-30s through mid-60s) and then late adulthood (mid-60s until end of life). When we reach the early stages of adulthood (between 20-40) the bodies of our children are at their peak of maturity although the weight and height of our bodies could increase slightly. When we are young our physical capabilities are at their peak which includes muscle strength, reaction time as well as sensory capabilities, heart function.
